For the fourth year in a row the Brecksville High School wrestling team ended their season with a Top 10 team finish at the division one state wrestling tournament. The Bees took a school record six qualifiers to this years state tournament. Junior Kyle Roddy, and seniors Josh Linden and Billy Vaughan led the Bees, and ended their season as state place-winners.
Senior Billy Vaughan made the most of his first year on the varsity mat. Vaughan was behind 2009 heavyweight state champion Jeremy Johnson the past three years. Vaughan entered the state tournament as the Medina Sectional champion and the Ashland District champion. After winning his first two matches, Billy won his state semi-final match with an exciting 5-4 double overtime over Greg Kuhar (St. Edward). Vaughan finished his senior year as the 2010 heavyweight state runner-up when he lost a double overtime match to Ben Buzzelli (Wadsworth). Vaughan and Buzzelli wrestled four times this year with each of them winning two.
Senior Josh Linden had an incredible run to his state finals appearance. Linden suffered an injury two week before the sectional tournament. Linden entered the sectional tournament far from 100% healthy. Josh finished fourth in the sectional tournament and then avenged one of his sectional losses to finish third in the district tournament and qualify for the state tournament. Linden then won three straight state matches, including wins over the Mentor District champion Bissell (Twinsburg) and the Fairfield District champion Mason (Cincinnati Princeton). Linden finished his senior year as the 2010 160 pound state runner-up.
Brecksville's other state place-winner was junior Kyle Roddy. Roddy was making his second trip to the state tournament. With two one point victories, including one over the Mentor District Champion Locsie (Willoughby South), Roddy found himself in the state semi-finals, and finished his junior year as a state place-winner with a 6th place finish at 145 pounds.
In the past three years the Brecksville High School wrestling program has had 16 state qualifiers, 11 state place-winners, 6 state finalist, and 2 state champions.
