Amanda Prough women's State Champ!  Wins USGWA Title.....

Amanda Prough, who has been on the wrestling team for 3 years now, won the 14th Annual Michigan USGWA Girls Wrestling State Championship in her weight class on Sunday.  Amanda went 5-0 on the day, defeating all of her opponents in the first period before winning a close match for the state title!  Make sure when you see her in the halls to congratulate her for being the 1st female state champ in Wayne history.

Josh Mills qualifies for Individual Regionals!  Finishes top 32 in the State!

Senior and 4th year Wolfpack wrestler Josh Mills qualified for the Individual Regionals this Saturday at Saline High School!  Josh, seeded 7th at Individual Districts, was able to break seed and finish 4th at the 160 pound weight class.  In the blood round, Josh was able to dominate and pin the 4th seed.  This occurred after knocking off a crosstown rival in the quarters!  Although he didn't qualify for the state meet, he still finished top 32 in the state at the 160 pound weight class, and was the only member of the team to make it.  Way to go Josh!

Date and Time set for Banquet!!!!

Our banquet will be held at Marvaso's Italian Restaurant on Tuesday, March 9th, beginning at 6:30 pm.  Wrestlers eat for free, but parents need to purchase tickets.  Contact the boosters for ticket information at jolly70nutt@yahoo.com

WOLFPACK FINISHES 17-10!!!

Although the Wolfpack lost their final dual of the year to crosstown rival John Glenn, some positive things occurred that night.  The biggest being at the biggest weight-class!  Chris Bowie was able to defeat the #2 ranked heavyweight in the state, Dustin Gajowiak.  Bowie has only wrestled for 15 months, but his hard work and dedication helped him reach a goal and knock off a top ranked contender.  Nice job Chris....

During the KLAA finals, the Wolfpack was able to defeat Plymouth Salem handily, as well as host Grand Blanc 35-33!  The boys rallied at the end even though they were down 10 points with only two matches left.  Freshman Mike Nicholson cracked the Varsity lineup, and not only handled his opponent, but was able to pin him in the third period on a headlock to secure the much needed bonus points.  In the final match of the night, Devon Adams was trailing in the 3rd period, and came back to take the lead.  This was not enough though, as the team needed at least a major decision to tie.  Devon went for it, and landed a headlock that silenced the gym!  The bonus points gave the team the win they wanted so badly, and raised the team record to 17-9!  Nice job wrestlers, way to never give up.

The fourth week of our conference meets took place at Livonia Stevenson, where the Wolfpack lost to a very tough Franklin squad and then lost again to the host team.

The third week of our conference meets was tough, with the Wolfpack getting throttled at home by two state ranked teams.  The John Glenn Rockets, currently ranked 8th in the state, handed the Wolfpack a crosstown beating!  Then the Cheifs of Canton, currently ranked 4th, did the same amount of damage.  We are a good team, but we have a long way to go if we want to become one of the best!

The second week of our conference meets was a crazy one, with all four teams at the Quad going 1-1!  The Wolfpack came out and knocked off the Churchill Chargers 44-21, which was a big win for the team and coaches.  Both Coach Freeman and Coach Vasiloff went to Livonia Churchill, and loved defeating their former team and head coach in their own gym.  The second round didn't go so well, with the Wolfpack falling the Plymouth Wildcats 41-18.  Ironically, Livonia Franklin beat Plymouth earlier in the night, but then lost a barn-burner to Churchill!  With all four teams going 1-1 on the night, it will be crazy to see how each team finishes in our division.

Our conference meets began, and the Wolfpack finished 1-1 against the South Lyon schools.  The first dual was a 54-19 win over a very small South Lyon East team, and then a 32-37 loss to South Lyon.  The second match taught us the importance of bonus points and mental mistakes.

Christmas came early this year for the Wolfpack, and our present was a 1st place team trophy from the Gibraltar Carlson Christmas Team Tournament on December 23rd.  The team went 5-0 on the day, defeating Gross Ile in the first round and Dearborn in the second.  That second win was big for the squad, as Dearborn ended our season when they beat us at home last year.  The third round was against a young Gabriel Richard team, which got the Wolfpack ready for their toughest challenges yet.  In the fourth round, the Wolfpack was able to defeat our friendly rival, Romulus, in a close 48-32 dual.  Former teammate and Romulus captain Mike Wallace wrestled tough on the day, and we were happy to see him doing well even though he was in a different singlet!  With 1st place already locked up, the boys had one more round to wrestle against host Gibraltar Carlson, whom they defeated earlier in the season 59-21.  The coaches warned the wrestlers that this time would be different, and it sure was!  The boys underestimated Carlson, who came out and defeated many of our veteran wrestlers and got out to a 22-0 lead.  Yet, once again the "Big 3" came though for the Wolfpack, which included pins from Dimitrus Renfroe, Dylan Korzetki, and Chris Bowie to close the gap to 22-18.  Pablo Flores fought off his back to save the team a point, followed by Darryl Ison and Cody Allen who kept their matches close against Carlsons best to avoid any bonus points.  What won the match for the Pack was three of our 2nd year wrestlers, and Devon Adams started it out by reversing off of his back and pinning his opponent.  Sophomore Kyle Szalai had the best match of his career, winning a close decision 3-2, which put the team down 33-34 going in to the final match of the night.  Second year senior Anwar Oliver had the weight of the whole team riding on his shoulders, which is exactly where he wanted it to be.  He went out there with confidence, and secured the win by pinning his opponent in the 3rd period, giving the team a 39-34 victory.  Because of his great attitude all season, hard work ethic, and natural leadership ability, Anwar was named captain after the tournament.  Congrats Anwar and to all of the wrestlers for pulling out a victory, and an even bigger congrats to Carlson and their coaches and wrestlers.  Thank you for a great dual, a great tournament, and for teaching us a lesson...

On December 19th, the team competed at the Michigan Center Team Tournament.  The boys started out with a solid win over Adrian Madison, and then wrestled the best dual they ever have against Manchester.  In division 4, Manchester is currently ranked 4th in the State, and the Wolfpack lost a close one by only 11 points.  The team won 6 matches to Manchester's 8.  Still not recovered from the loss to Manchester, another loss came to Brooklyn Columbia Central, yet the Pack rallied and beat Quincy and Blissfield to finish 3-2 and take 5th place on the day.

On December 16th, the Wolfpack suffered their first loss at the hands of a tough Northville squad, but bounced back to beat the top ranked KLAA North division team, Walled Lake Central.  It came down to the upperweights, and wins from Dimitrus Renfroe, Dylan Korzetki, and Chris Bowie sealed the deal on the night, putting the Wolfpack at 5-1 on the season.

Our second quad of the year was against Harper Woods and Romulus Summit Academy, and the Wolfpack won both matches handily, with the scores being 84-0 and 72-12.  Nice job varsity squad!

On Wednesday, December 2nd, the Wolfpack was able to defeat Gibraltar Carlson 59-21 and Lincoln Park 39-27. Going undefeated on the night were Tristan Jarosicwicz, Terry McCartney, Anwar Oliver, Josh Mills, Brandon Whittenberg, Dimitrus Renfroe, and Chris Bowie.  Also wrestling great on the night was newcomer Pablo Flores, who filled the 103 pound spot and made us all proud.  Way to go guys!

TOURNAMENTS

Congrats to all the wrestlers who competed at the Observerland Tournament and KLAA Championship!!!

At the first ever 24 team KLAA Individual Championship, the Wolfpack faced their toughest competition yet.  Of the 14 entered, only 3 walked out with medals.  Jalen Jones, Josh Mills, and Chris Bowie rose to the challenge and placed in the top 8.  Good luck to all the wrestlers this weekend at Individual Districts, which are at John Glenn.  Leave it all out on the mat!!!

The Wolfpack struggled at the Observerland tournament, with 7 wrestlers in the blood round and only 1 making it out.  That wrestler was Dimitrus Renfroe, who battled his way to a 6th place finish, and was the only teammate to walk out of the tournament with a medal.  Let's work hard and get some wrestlers underneath that spotlight next year...

With only 9 wrestlers in attendance, the Wolfpack made an impact at the 26 team Wayne County Tournament this past weekend.

The team finished 10th overall, even with such small numbers.  Taking home medals were Dylan Korzetki who made it all the way to the finals and finished second, Josh Mills who finished 3rd, Anwar Oliver finished 4th, and Chris Bowie finished 5th.  Placing were Jalen Jones (6th), Brandon Whittenberg (7th), and Dimitrus Renfroe (7th). Nice job gentlemen....

The JV wrestlers took home some medals and a 1st place trophy from our crosstown rivals!  Results to follow!

WOLFPACK PLACES 13, MEDALS 7 AT SALEM HOLIDAY!!!

The team finished 5th out of 13 teams on Tuesday, December 29th at the Salem Holiday Invitational. Leading the team was Anwar Oliver, who made it to the finals of the 140 pound weight class and got to wrestle under the spotlight.  Anwar wrestled a great match, but lost by 1 point as his opponent fought off an aggressive series of shots in the final minute of the match.  Great job Anwar!  Bronze medals were brought home by Jalen Jones and Tristan Jarosicwicz, and 4th place medals went to Dylan Korzetki, Dimitrus Renfroe, and Pablo Flores.  Finishing with a 5th place medal was Chris Bowie, and placing sixth was Brandon Whittenberg and Nate Cavanaugh.  Also finishing 6th was Cody Allen, who wrestled a full match despite being badly injured before the coaches decided to default him out of the tournament.  Way to go Cody, that shows a lot of heart!  Winning their final matches of the day and finishing in 7th place were Kevin Newborn, Kyle Szalai, and Devon Adams.  Congratulations to all the wrestlers, you made us all proud.

If you are attending high school, there is no excuse for academic ineligibility!  The school district requires a minimum GPA of 1.8 to participate in athletics.  Your coaches are here to help you!  Coach Vasiloff and Coach Freeman both work at the high school, and are here for you.  We want you to be more than just better wrestlers!  We want you to be the best you can in all that you do!  Most importantly, we want you to become educated and go on to do great things.  Don't throw away all of your hard work over the years and during this past summer!  Carry yourself with PRIDE!
Athlete of the week: Josh Mills
Name: Josh Mills
Date: 02/13/09
Year(s): 12th
Only two members of the team have been on the team for all 4 years, and Josh Mills is one of them.  He has worked hard, through the ups and downs, and reached a goal of qualifying for the Individual Regional tournament.  That makes him top 32 in the State of Michigan at 160 pounds!  Nice job Josh, and leave it all out on the mat at Regionals.  If you do, next stop is the floor of the Palace for the Individual State Finals....
