Shamrocks End Magical Season in Stunning Fashion
The Catholic Central Shamrocks rolled into the Palace of Auburn Hills this past weekend fresh off of one the greatest weekends in CC wrestling history. For the first time in 22 years the Shamrocks entered the tournament as State Champions. With the team portion of the season ending, it was time to focus on individual goals.
The Shamrocks qualified 14 wrestlers to the MHSAA Individual State Tournament, a new Division 1 record, and walked away with 7 All-Staters and 3 Champs. For the first time in the history of the program, CC placed 10 wrestlers at the prestigious event.
Winning titles for the Shamrocks were Alec Mooradian (back to back), Justin Melick (Picutred left), and senior captain Doug Eldridge(Pictured below).
Not since 1989 has CC had three champs in the same season. Melick wrestled a solid tournament and capped it off in the finals by defeating Tanner Zych of Caledonia 7-0 at 135lbs.
Doug Eldridge (Picutred Right) brought the Shamrock faithful to their feet as he came back to defeat Lowell's Andrew Morse 6-5 in the closing seconds of the title match at 145lbs. Eldridge, who placed 4th at last year's state tournament, finishes his story book season with a 51-8 record.
Alec Mooradian, (Pictured left)joined names like Jones, Nadhir, Helm, Krueger, Heaton, Rogowski, Dong, and Martin in becoming a 2x State Champion for Catholic Central. Mooradian captured the title at 119lbs by defeating Brandon Shuart of Davison 3-0. The two time state state champ finished his season with a 59-1 record. His two year record now stands at 114-1.
The Pinning Machine
Todd Melick (Pictured below), known as one of the state's most dangerous wrestlers, continued his pinning ways by pinning his way to the state finals at 112lbs. Todd Melick pinned Alek Zanchetta of Chippewa Valley, Alex Calendrino of Howell and Zach Roberson of Clarkston to join his brother Justin in the finals. Melick lost to both Calendrino and Roberson at the state tournament last year. Melick's run fell short in the finals as he lost to Holt's Freddie Rodriguez. The sensational sophmore finished the year with a 37-3 record.
Sweet Revenge
Mike Kinville and Nick Mason (Pictured left) showed character by wrestling their way back through the consolation bracket. Both Kinville and Mason defeated the wrestlers who had knocked them out of the championship bracket. Kinville defeated Oxford's Prescott Line for 3rd place at 215lbs, while Mason defeated Troy Athen's Jeremy Stoian in the consolation semi's. Mason ended up finishing fourth in the tournament at 130lbs.
Battling Together
T.J. Fagan and Ken Bade(Pictured Right) joined each other in battling back through the 103 consolation bracket. Fagan, a sophmore, and Bade, a freshman, defeatedthier Oxford opponents in the placement matches as Bade defeated Keegan Cantera 4-0 to finish 3rd, while Fagan defeated Roco Borg 4-0 to finish 5th.
Senior Salute
Senior Charlie Joseph ended his CC Career by joining his father and close family members as a Michigan All-State Wrestler. Joseph finished 8th at 125lbs and closed his senior year with a 43-21 record.
Trealout Tough
Junior Miles Trealout made the most out of his first trip to the Palace by placing 7th at 189lbs. Trealout defeated Utica Eisenhower's Nick Ditomaso 5-0 in his placement match. The "Mule" finishes his junior year with a 44-22 record and two state championships.
Record Books
Seniors Matt Thompson, Gerid Gee, Andrew Johnson and junior Andy Erickson all wrestled well but fell short of earning All-State honors. These young men will always have a spot in the record books for being a part in the only team in Division 1 history to qualify all 14 wrestlers for the Individual State Tournament.

For the first time since 1988 the Shamrocks of Detroit Catholic Central hoisted the Division1 State Wrestling Championship Trophy. The Shamrocks defeated Rockford 39-24 at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. Coach Hancock had this to say about the team and each individual playing a part. "Our guys understand the sport and that they must do their job each time we step on the mat. Everybody did their job this weekend, the wrestlers, managers and coaching staff all did a phenomenal job."
"It's an honor to sit in the corner with young men who work so hard and give it all they got each time they step on the line. I preached to them all weekend that championships are won and lost in the wrestling room. We train harder than any team in the state and I think that showed this weekend. This team will go down in the record books as one of the most impressive squads in the history of Catholic Central athletics." ~ Coach Hancock

Why are they making us do this?" Our coach said, "Have some pride. Man up. Do this. Let's go." You push through it. You fight through it. That's why you're here. You're mentally tough. Coach Hancock had this to say about the A team's two losses:
"I really like the way our guys wrestled against Allegan. We battled and fought through the tough situations. Allegan's a good team and we had a chance to win the dual. The difference was bonus points, we can't give up pins. Against Lowell, I think our guys were drained. I hate to say it but we're not in good enough shape yet. We can't wrestle two hard duals back to back yet. That's going to change. Overall, I think it was a great learning experience. I'm proud of our guys and we understand it's not about December 11th its all about February 26- 27th."

CC Wrestling Room Closed for Antimicrobial Treatment
Catholic Central High School has taken another step forward in the protection of Shamrock athletes. Under the guidance of new athletic director Aaron Babicz, CC has chosen to team up with Tim Fagan of Coach's Cleaning and John Slack of CSG to treat the CC wrestling room and mats with a A Sports Antimicrobial System.
The Antimicrobial System provides a durable, positivley charged dual molecular bond that when applied kills illness-causing microorganisms, such as staph and MRSA, and works 24/7 to inhibit the growth of bacteria, mold, and fungi for up to three years when professionally applied.
The Sports Antimicrobial System has been the antimicrobial choice of professional, collegiate and amateur sports for years. Among the organizations that have used the Sports Antimicrobial System to protect their facilities and equipment from harmful microorganisms are: the Detroit Lions, Washington Redskins, Minnesota Vikings, Miami Heat, University of Michigan, Ohio State University, and the University of Southern California.

Wrestling & Christian Faith
Ask most wrestlers what makes them successful, and they'll talk about long practice sessions, endless conditioning drills, and hours in the weight room. Some give credit to coaches, family, or a particular workout partner. Still others cite their deep religious faith as a key component of their success. Recently, InterMat's Mark Palmer interviewed three wrestlers -- Derek Garcia, Justin Kerber, and Sam Hazewinkel -- who have openly expressed their Christianity in the past ... with the specific purpose of learning more about their faith, and how it serves them in wrestling, and in life off the mat.
Alec Mooradian capped off an impressive freshman year this weekend by placing 5th at the Cadet Freestyle National Championships in Fargo North Dakota. Mooradian who represented Team Michigan at 119lbs finished the tournament with an impressive 10-2 record and defeated Louis Mascola of New Jersey 1-0,1-0 to claim 5th place.
Mooradian joined 6 fellow Michiganders in claiming All American honors. Taylor Massa, Jordan Wohlfert, and Ben Whitford all of whom reside in St. Johns claimed National titles while representing Michigan. St. Johns has confirmed and they will be attending the 2010 Detroit Catholic Central Super Duals.
Whitford who will be a freshman next year stole the show by defeating returning double champ Mark Grey of New Jersey at 112lbs in dramatic fashon. For the win Whitford was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Massa who joined Mooradian in going undefeated this year as a freshman became the first wrestler to triple crown the National Championships in back to back seasons. Massa won the folkstyle, Greco, and Freestyle Championships. Massa was also named Outstanding Wrestler in the Greco tournament.

TEAM SHAMROCK HAS SUCCESSFUL OUTING AT
MIDWEST GRAND CHALLENGE
Coach Kruase and Team Shamrock traveled a high school and a middle school team to the campus of Michigan State University to compete against All-Star teams from across the midwest in the Midwest Grand Challenge.
Team Shamrock was well represented as the middle school team went 3-2 on the day and finished 6th in a field dominated full of All-Star Teams. Team Shamrock pushed their pool champion Davison Wrestling Club to the edge but fell 47-27. When asked about his teams performance Coach Kruase responded, "These guys brought the heat today! I'm very excited about this program and the direction in which it's heading. We're taking this program to the "Next Level" and I think we showed that today."
The high school squad, which was composed of all DCC Wrestlers battled throughout the day and pushed some of the best wrestlers in the state. The team fell to eventual champions Team Grizzley in the first round. The highlight of the dual came when Todd Melick pinned Div. 2-112lb state runner-up Shane Dutton. Team Shamrock finished 3rd in their pool and 11th overall.
When Coach Russ Hancock was asked about the day he replied: " These guys battled hard today and I am awfully excited for their future. This tournament was loaded with All-Star teams and our guys didn't let that bother them. They went out each match and competed hard, and thats all we can ask for."

If your son is interested in representing Team Shamrock
Freshman state champion Alec Mooradian was honored this week as the starting 112lber on the Michigan Grappler's 2009 Dream Team. Mooradian who went 50-0 this year in route to capturing the division 1 crown, becomes the 2nd straight shamrock to make the team, as Mike Martin was named to the Dream Team in 2008. No argument here, as Mooradian wrestled himself to the first team by defeating the second team member BJ Suitor at the Goodrich Tournament of Champions, and defeating third team member Victor Vettese at the Oakland County Tournament.
Nearly 50 people gathered this past weekend at Kevin Gee's Tri- County Cleaning Supplies headquarter to support the CC Wrestling program. The tournament featured 6 tables of 8 with the winner of each table advancing to one final table. The tournament came down to two strong poker players as CC Alum Dave Butwill outlasted poker phenom Brett Faustman for the CCPT bracelet. Faustman who made his second straight appearance is known for his $892,000 victory in the World Poker Tour Championship in Tunica Mississippi. (Click Here to read article) Taking the third was former CC State Champion Joe Urso.
The CC Wrestling Coaching Staff would like to thank Kevin Gee and Dave Butwill for managing the event putting on a fantastic tournament. A special thanks to Chris Popiela for catering the event and to Mike Perales for providing several items to be auctioned off.
This Tournament will provide funds to allow the CC Wrestling Team to train with the best clinicians in the country. Thanks to all who showed your support and dedication to CC Wrestling!
