HOLIDAY HIGHLIGHTS

The Rangers were at Southview High School for a two day tournament.  This tournament is one of the strongest tournaments in the area, featuring state placers at just about every weight class.  Lakewood took seventh place overall and had many outstanding performances. Yousef wrestled well finishing in third place.  Yousef only has one loss and it was to a state placer.  Ahmad Yaar is one of the biggest surprises in the varsity line up. Yaar is at 119 and has done very well considerering it is his first year of high school wrestling.  Yaar has placed in every tournament and he took third place twice.  Nick Ramsey has had strong performances against state caliber wrestlers all year long. Nick only has two losses and again, both were to state placers.  The Ranger’s 140 pound weight class is filled with one of the most exciting young wrestler I have seen in a long time.  Tony Goddard is a first year freshmen wrestler.  Tony does not have the best record.  In fact, his losses out number his wins, but he is the type of young man who is fun to watch because he will not stop wrestling.  Tony came back to win a match after being down by eight points. In the last thirty seconds he threw his opponent to his back and pinned him.  Tony then wrestled his way in for third place.  He lost his finals match, but placing fourth at a varsity tournament is a giant step towards becoming a great wrestler.

Tony Sclimenti took second place - losing to a Southview wrestler in the finals by one point.  Tony is one of the best team leaders I have ever had the pleasure of coaching.  He leads by example and he is a vocal leader. Peti (the HAMMER) Tapolyia is also one of our leaders in the room.  He is not vocal, but he leads by example.  That leadership showed in this tournament.  Peti took a third place - only losing one match the entire week end.

What impresses me the most about the Rangers this year is the amount of fight each wrestler has.  We may not have the most talent at certain weights but these young men are dedicated and bring a tremendous energy to each match.

PARMA / CUYAHUGA HTS. TRI

The Rangers wrestled an exciting match with Parma.  Parma won 32 – 30.

Cuyahoga Hts. Proved to be too strong of a team for Lakewood.  Cuyahoga Hts. Won 48-12.  Lakewood is looking forward to getting back on track with the Midpark tournament on the seventeenth of this month.
