Boys Basketball: The Firebirds beat Troy at UD Arena on Thursday 74-61. Mark Shadowens had a season high 27 points. Matt Lee scored 16 points. Fairmont beat Sidney on Sunday 62-44 to bring home the sectional title. Four Firebirds were in double figures, Kevin Sharick with 17 points, Mark Shadowens with 13, Matt Lee and Adam Westbeld had 11 each. Fairmont will play Princeton in the District Championship on Saturday at UD Arena, tip-off is at 11:00 am. With a Fairmont win, the Firebirds will play the Trotwood vs. Moeller winner in the Regional Semi-finals on Wednesday, March 17th Xavier’s Cintas Center, tip-off is at 8:00 pm.
Girls Basketball: The Lady Firebirds brought home another District Championship with a 52-32 win over Miamisburg at Harrison High School on Saturday evening. Cassie Sant led the Birds with 17 points while Chelsea Welch chipped in 13 points. The Firebirds will play Princeton in the Regional Semi-finals on Tuesday, at the Nutter Center, tip-off is at 6:15 pm. With a Fairmont win, the Firebirds will play the Butler vs. Walnut Hills winner in the Regional Finals on Saturday, tip-off is at 7:30 pm.
Bowling: Molly Crouch and the Boys Bowling team ended their season at the District Championships at Eastern Lanes in Middletown.
Wrestling: Firebird senior wrestler Jake Sage finished his tremendous career at the 2010 State Wrestling Championships in Columbus over the weekend. The Division I 135 bracket was one of the toughest in the entire tournament and turned out to be the most unpredictable. Several returning state placewinners fell early and often, including a defending state champion. In a tough draw, Jake won his first round bout over fellow returning placewinner and eventual 4th place finisher Francis Calarco of North Royalton, 8-5. In the quarterfinals, Jake fell to eventual state champion Louden Gordon of Wadsworth. In the ensuing 2nd round of consolation, Jake was eliminated by defending state champion (and eventual 3rd place finisher) Shawn Fayette of Miamisburg.
