STATE CHAMPIONS!
The Buford Lady Wolves won a second consecutive State Championship with another thrilling win over Calhoun 5-1, in 8 innings. The Lady Wolves took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th, thanks to the pitching and hitting of Karly Fullem, but saw Calhoun roar back with a solo homer to send the game into extra innings.
Fullem started things off in the 8th with a perfect sac. bunt and Kallie Case, Alysha Rudnik, Whitney Holman and Lexi Overstreet all delivered run scoring hits to give the Lady Wolves their second state championship in as many years.
Whitney Holman made the defensive play of the year with a diving, backhand catch in the hole off a Calhoun line drive. The Lady Wolves, energized by the defensive gem, scored in the next inning when Brandi Hellemn beat out a bunt, advanced to second on Whitney Wolfe's sac. bunt and scored on Fullem's hard single to left.
The Lady Wolves finish the season with 34 wins (School Record), 2 losses and 1 tie. Buford gave up only 1 run in 7 games during sectionals and the Elite 8 and only allowed 32 for the season. Buford also only committed 24 errors for the season, another school record. For the seniors, Whitney Holman, Brandi Hellemn, Lauren D'Amico and Andrea Hannah- it was a perfect ending to a remarkable career- State 3rd place finishes as freshman and sophomores and state championships as juniors and seniors.
The Lady Wolves will return 7 starters, including their 2 ace pitchers in 2009.
