The Buford Lady Wolves moved to 2-0 in the Elite 8 Tournament, defeating Rutland 1-0 in a tight game Thursday night. Buford went to freshman Karly Fullem for the 2nd game of the day and she pitched like a champion, working all 7 innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 8 in the complete game shutout. For the offensive side, Nicole Bell, Brandi Hellemn and Melissa Higginbotham put together one push for the lone run of the game and the win. Bell led off the bottom of the 5th with a sharp single to center. Hellemn followed with a perfect sac. bunt moving Bell to second. Higginbotham followed with a long drive over the centerfielders head, scoring Bell and giving Buford a 1-0 lead. Defensively, the Wolves were perfect, making plays throughout the game without a mistake.
Offensively, Whitney Holman went 1-3 with a double, Ashley Razey walked all 3 times up, Shelbi Valek went 1-3, Bell went 1-2 with a run and Higginbotham went 1-2 with a triple and the lone RBI of the night.
For Buford, they advance to 2-0 in the tournament for the first time in school history and have a re-match with GACS awaiting in the winner's bracket finals on Friday night at 7:00. The Lady Wolves are now 31-6-1 on the season.
