The Buford Lady Wolves slammed their way into the State Championship Game behind Senior Ashley Razey's 8th inning grandslam off Jessica Coan to defeat # 1 ranked GACS 4-0. Freshman Melissa Dickie picked up the win, firing a complete game shutout in her first outing in Columbus and the Elite 8. The Wolves avenged 3 earlier losses to GACS, by playing outstanding defense, dominating in the circle and putting together one big inning against the top pitcher in the state.
Tied 0-0 after 7, Buford exploded for 4 in the top of the 8th. Brandi Hellemn started at 2nd base (ITB) and Whitney Holman slashed a line-drive single to left to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out. Chelsie Thomas bunted and reached first base as GACS elected to hold the runners at bay, setting the stage for the epic confrontation between the top power hitter and the top pitcher in AA and possibly the state. Razey took a 2-2 pitch over the centerfield fence sending the Buford contigency into a frenzy. The Slam put Buford up 4-0 and Dickie retired the Lady Spartans in the bottom of the 8th to give Buford their biggest win ever in Columbus. The game was played before an overflow and loud crowd, with the emotion of a state championship game. For Buford, the win was their second against the Lady Spartans and the only 2 losses suffered all season by GACS. Buford will now advance to the 11:15 am championship game vs the GACS/Berrien Co. winner. Buford is now 1 win away from their first softball state championship.
