4 Time State Champions
The Lady Wolves staged a dramatic 7th inning rally to overtake Union Co. and capture the 2010 State Championship, 6-2. Buford trailed 2-1 entering the top of the 7th inning, before the fireworks began. Melissa Dickie led of the 7th with a long home run to left to tie the game at 2. Aly Hicks followed with a walk and Chelsie Thomas reached on a perfect bunt to push Hicks to second. Cara Cole's sacrifice bunt worked to perfection, as Union County's throw slipped by first allowing Hicks to score with the go ahead run, while Thomas moved to third. Cole then stole second and Kallie Case's sacrifice fly drove in Thomas to give the Wolves a 4-2 lead. Lexi Overstreet capped off the inning and a great week for her with her third home run of the tournament, scoring Cole and giving Buford a 6-2 lead.
Karly Fullem's allowed 2 runs in the first and then settled down to shutdown the Union offense the rest of the day.
Kallie Case gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a long homerun to right, but Union Co. answered in the bottom of the first on a hit batter, a misplayed bunt, and a 2 run single to right. The game remained 2-1 Union until the Buford explosion in the 7th.
For Buford seniors Karly Fullem, Melissa Dickie, Chelsie Thomas and Whitney Wolfe, it was their 4th trip to Columbus and their 4th state championship. These ladies went 122-17-2 for their varsity careers including a 16-1 record in Columbus and a 10-0 record in sectionals/1st-2nd rounds. |
